United Arab Emirates Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan spoke at a Harvard Business School Alumni event arranged by Goulam Amarsy a member of both HBS Gulf-Alumni Network and Capital Club Dubai on Tuesday 22nd February.

Sheikh Nahyan, whose other esteemed positions include: Chairman of Abu Dhabi Group, Union National Bank, United Bank Limited and WARID Telecom International was an inspirational guest speaker to an audience of successful business leaders. HBS Alumni, whilst hugely privileged in their opportunity to receive first hand knowledge from Sheikh Nahyan, were certainly a well matched audience for his hopes of a ‘knowledge driven economy’. ‘I am pleased to be with you and I recognise the importance of such an organisation. Many of our brightest leaders have studied at Harvard’, said Sheikh Nahyan.

Sheikh Nahyan believes that ‘conditions round the globe demand new thinking and innovative approaches to their conduct’, and that these conditions, ’highlight the extreme importance of leaders at all levels of society and the supply of all ideas’.

The term ‘knowledge driven economy’, which Sheikh Nahyan sees as vital for success, was a term used throughout his speech, not only in global terms, but in relation to United Arab Emirates and their educational plans. ‘The UAE has declared a knowledge driven economy as a major goal. We want to create new knowledge and translate it into innovations. We support student exchanges, international relations and have active alliances’, said Sheikh Nahyan.

Sheikh Nahyan finished his speech with a significant compliment to his audience; ‘We are convinced that educational excellence is the foundation for national development and progress, and Harvard Business School fits well with these national convictions – by educating leaders that can make a difference in the world.’
